Biodiesel producers have a new mandated test that their products must pass at an estimated cost to them of 3 to 10 cents per gallon. The ASTM D6751 Cold Soak Filter Test is designed to control particulate contamination levels in animal and vegetable-based biodiesel. The test was developed after years of research following truck engine failures during a bitter 2005 cold spell in Minnesota where off-spec biodiesel was a suspected cause. Experts predict use of the new test also will help expand the market for biodiesel.
